Windows Neptune is dead. It and another project called Oddyssey were both cancelled, and their remains were combined with Windows 2000 into one, which is Whistler (also known as Windows.NET 1.0). There will be a Personal, Professional, Server, and Advanced Server version of Whistler. All of thses, including Personal, will be based off of NT, NOT the 9x platform. They are also developing a 64-bit verion of Professional, Server, and Advnaced Server.
Windows Blackcomb (aka Windows.NET 2.0) is the OS that will be out sometime in 2002, it is the sucessor to Whistler, and at this point not to much is known about this.
The project code named Mars does not refer to Windows Millennium, it is the just released MSN Explorer (found here) which is a spruced up (and in my opinion ugly) version of IE designed for MSN and Hotmail users.
I get all my info from www.winsupersite.com and www.wininformant.com, both run by Paul Thurrott, whom seems to have a good tie to Microsoft. The 64-bit version is designed to run on the Itanium processor.
i have tried out neptune and it is pretty neat. i have never had a faster booting OS than this one, and surprisingly its pretty darn stable. Yes they did leave this project to persue whistler and blackcomb(64-bit whistler basically i think) other than what's been posted here who knows what the heck microsoft is up to.
