Windows mystery updates (XP Home)

I have auto update enabled & set to notify only. The usual monthly updates that I choose show download & install progress as it's happening. After waiting a while on IE7 I decided to give it a shot a while back & clicked download at which time it disappeared, no minimize to tray, no dwnld progress, no click to install button afterwards, nothing. At some point it must have done it's thing because IE shows up as ver 7 something in system info now. Having waited on SP3 as well I gave it the go ahead yesterday & got the same Houdini act. After re-booting today system properties still shows SP2. Is this normal? How can I tell if the dwnld completed or if there was a problem with the install? So far everything works ok but I'd just like to know what's up.

Thanks
