Windows - motherboard swap

I'm moving from a intel to amd dual core setup... Any way to not have to re-install from the ground up. To make matters more interesting, the boot drive is actually 2 raptors in stripe. I just hate the thought of having to go through and re-install everything, and try to get things back to "normal".

When I recently upgraded from a single-core AMD chip and motherboard to a dual-core AMD I was able to boot into Windows and have everything working after a couple of reboots. Windows just had to automatically reinstall various drivers. I did have to manually help it along in some cases by removing from the device manager some things that hadn't been setup correctly the first time. I ended up reinstalling Windows after I got a new hard drive working but it was working perfectly before I did that.

I don't know if it makes a difference that you have a RAID setup. As long as you don't have to format the drives as part of your new motherboard's RAID setup steps...

In theory, move from motherboard to motherboard is possible with little to no trouble. Assuming your copy of Windows is up to date with drivers and such, the fact that it's got a different processor to play with shouldn't cause problems. I've not tried to install XP 64 bit, because to be honest, it's a bit crap.

I shouldn't imagine that the move should eb too much of a hassel, assuming your new motherboard can deal with the way you have your drives set up, if you set that up in the motherboard bios, then I can't imagine theere being much to worry about.

This is Windows though. Theories are never quite the same as doing it..

I wish you the best of luck with that one 😀

Thanks for all the information.

I put the new motherboard, cpu and a stick of memory in a temporary case until the new case comes in. I did plug up the raptors, and the new motherboard sees the stripe set already. It tried to boot windows but hung at the screen where the blue dot goes across. Not having time to mess with it, I put the drives back in the old computer to give me something to use until I had some time.

Tonight I'm going to do a backup of with raid pair to another drive, and then see if the repair idea in the post above will let get me moved over.

Again, thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it goes...

Old system - Soyo Dragon 2 with P4 2.8e, 6600GT AGP, original Sonata case w/Quiet 380

New system - Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, X2 4200+, SLI'ed BFG 6600's (passive cooling = no noise), Antec P180 with Antec NeoHE 550W

Why 6600GT to 2x6600? QUIET... The 6600GT fan is at a pitch that annoys me. Since I don't game much at all, 2x 6600 in SLI should give me enough power without fan noise.

That MIGHT hold me for a little while...
