Windows Mobile errors

Got a problem with my sons phone. It is a Motorola Q9M on PagePlus (Verizon network), and the phone works flawlessly. However, when we try and put apps/games on it, most of the time I get this error:

"Installation of XXX software .CAB was unsuccessful. The installation file is not intended for this device."

This happens in 9 out of 10 games I tried to install. ALL of the ones that error out are Windows Mobile compatible. The Q9M has Windows Mobile 6.1 and I upgraded it to .NET 3.5 Compact.

Anyone have any ideas?

Computer is running Windows Mobile Device Center on Vista. and have a Motorola USB cable to hook the phone to the computer.

Every now and then, one of the games installs fine. No set pattern to it....

99% chance you're trying to install games for Windows Mobile with the touch screen (pocket PC edition) which I believe is still technically called Windows Mobile. You need to look for WM 'smartphone' edition games.

Well, I sure didn't know that!! I don't think that any of them were touch screen apps, but I will have to check again. A lot of these games were 2, 3, or 4 years old....

PocketPC QM is old, I can't say 100% this is the cause of your problem, but that's the exact error I got whenever I tried to install a PPC app on my Motorola Q.

But what about some of the old apps/games that were written before touch screens? Shouldn't those load fine?

look at the resolution, i had that error when trying to install for a larger screen than my device was. could be related, mebbe not.

Windows Mobile has had touch screens since the onset of Windows Mobile. Don't forget that it started as Pocket PC - their PDA devices before smartphones were very big. They transitioned it to cell phones, branching in two different directions - Windows Mobile Professional (or Pocket PC edition) which was for their PDAs in phone form, and Windows Mobile Smartphone edition, which was for non-touch phones like the Moto Q, T-Mobile SDA/Dash, etc.

This. They are two different OS's even though they are pretty much the same. Programs written for regular WM will not work on the smartphone version.

Looks like you guys hit the nail on the head. I went back and looked at the websites where I found the few games that DID install and they did say they were the WM "Smartphone" version.

You guys are top shelf

Now to find games that are only WM Smartphone compatible....

Also, they've rebranded everything by making the distinction that Windows Mobile Professional is the touch screen (PPC edition), and Windows Mobile Standard is the smartphone version. lame.........

I was able to find a few more games that were for the smartphone and they did indeed install fine....
