My dad has an Ipaq that came with Windows Mobile 2003, which we then upgraded to Windows Mobile 2005 when the upgrade disk came from HP. I don't actively use it, but it seems that the PDA has been slightly more unstable since the upgrade. I speculate that if you got it on a PDA new from the store, that you probably wouldn't have these problems, but I don't know. As far as improvements from 2003 to 2005, I didn't really see that much, but neither my dad nor I are PDA gearheads, so there are probably some things there that we just don't see.

I have it on my new Dell Axim x51v.

It seems OK. I hate that Dell left out the Bluetooth headset capability. Hopefully the next BIOS revision (whenever that will be.....) will remedy that.

If you are talking SmartPhones, like the Verizon 6700, things like Push-messaging and the new security improvements might be of importance to some users. But some of the latest features won't be available until the MSFP (Messaging and Security Feature Pack) is implemented in your particular device.

I've got a PPC-6700 (Sprint); push-messaging and over the air synching is very nice (even better than a Crackberry!)

It came with all the fun toys (WiFi, Bluetooth, EvDO) and I can teather it to my laptop for internet connectivity while I'm on the road which is nice.

Are you looking at a particular device? What are you planning on doing with it/using it for? Depending on the manufacturer, hardware, etc. your experience is going to very greatly.

I have a Palm 700w with WM5 and I love it. I was coming from a craptactular Samsung I600 with Smartphone 2003, so the 700w is a huge leap for me.

It doesn't hae wifi like spyordie's, but I do have EvDO and Bluetooth. Verizon cripples the Bluetooth on this phone, so you can't wirelessly tether it to the laptop. They do stupid Bluetooth tricks with many of their phones though.

The Palm doesn't have push email yet, but supposedly it will be released at the end of the April, which is rapidly approaching. Personally, I don't think any email I get is important enough that it can't wait the 15 minutes I have my sync set to, but some people are fanatical about that crap.

WiFi is nice when I'm at home because EvDO coverage there is shoddy but I still dont use it that frequently. When wifi is enabled battery consumption goes through the roof, at best it's just a convinience thing for me.

I dont think you're missing much, especially w/ EvDO.
