Windows Messenger - Impossible to Uninstall?

I just received my new PC this week, and with it comes the growing pains of learning XP. The biggest pain thus far has been Windows Messenger. It insists on starting up everytime I open up Outlook Express, even though I've clearly marked it in OE to NOT open up with it. It's slowing down my otherwise silky smooth new PC experience, and I'd like to just remove it entirely if possible.

Can this actually been done? Microsoft's site has no information on removing it, and thus far I haven't found a utility that'll allow me to.

Do a search in the OS forum. There was a really neat way to remove it. Worked for me 🙂

Do a search for sysoc.inf on your computer, open it up in notepad and then do a find/replace for 'hide' with a blank replace field and click replace all. You can then uninstall it from add/remove programs (probably the windows components section) ...I'm assuming you mean the MS IM client that's installed by default.

Firingsquad had a writeup about tweaking XP and this is one of the things they covered, you can find the 'guide' there. (there's at least 3 parts)

Thanks for the advice. Neither method worked, so I decided that it might as well be AIM (which I actually use) that pops up if one has to. So I changed my default IM program to that. Once that was done, I went into AIM and unchecked the option for it to be the default IM program. That worked perfectly, as now neither one pops up unless I want it to. 🙂

hmm, should've worked except you need to make sure windows is searching hidden/system files too...anyways glad you engineered your own solution 🙂
