Windows Messenger for XP versus MSN Messenger for XP

I am entangled, my brother is in Spain and he told me about a Messenger we could use to chat, I assumed it was Windows Messenger so I went, enabled it and signed in. After having signed I saw my user is shared with another application called MSN Messenger you can get access to not just from your PC but also from the web.

I am positive they are different applications just because when I tried to get the latest version I noticed Windows Messenger for XP is 4.7 while MSN Messenger for XP is 5.0.

I want to be able to chat with my brother but also want to know the difference and relationship between the 2 applications (at least I see they share the username and passwords).

Is there anybody willing to lose some time elaborating something?

Thanks Gustavo.-

Basically what it amounts to is one is Intregrated into the OS (Windows XP),
the other is an addon (for multiple OS's), both utilitizing the same features.
(real?time, voice and video conferencing, instant messaging)

There are versions of the 2 applications for all windows platforms so I think you are wrong.
