I just installed XP Pro and I want to know how to turn off Windows Messenger, Its not in the add/remove?

You should have tried searching, but go start, run, services.msc, go to messenger, properties, disable.

I'll say this: although mine shows disabled, it still comes on at times.

ive never seen it. i ran XP for about 6 months before i dissabled it and never saw it

I also never see the actavation thing after i initally do it

i guess im special 😀

if it's the messenger service, disable it in services.msc

if it's Windows Messenger, disablle it in mcconfig.

So I've read its bad to unistall and not recommended to disable, Should I just live with it?

Why in hell does this issue cause so many problems??? Firstly what are you talking about MSN Messenger (the IM client) or the Messenger service??

If its the MSN Messenger client you can remove it by doing the following (taken from TweakXP.com)...

1. Click on the Start button and select Run.
2. Type: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

If its the messenger service just disable it.

Its not bad to uninstall or disable it, its just some people believe that its better to actually block the port rather than disable the service, I personally believe that for home users disabling the service is sufficient.

It's a little easier to just open Windows Messenger's main UI, click Tools->Options->Preferences, and uncheck both "Run when windows starts" and "Allow to run in the background". It won't auto-launch again.

If you have SP1, you can also remove the Windows Messenger shortcut from your Start menu. Go to Add/Remove Components, and check the box (it's down near the bottom).

You could hack it off your machine as several have suggested, but if you ever decide to install MSN Messenger and use any of its advanced features (such as videoconferencing or app sharing), you'll need to re-install Windows Messenger again for those features to work correctly.
