Windows Media Services content prep

Anyone here have any experience with Windows Media Services? I'm researching it as a potential upgrade to an existing streaming audio library based on IIS 6. One of the things I'm not clear on is whether content has to be encoded prior to staging on the host? If we have a million .mp3s do we have to encode them to some special format, or to multiple bitrates, or can we just point WMS at the directories and click "go".

Also, is metadata required or optional for streamed content? Any insight would be appreciated.
