Windows Media Player using ONE FULL 4400+ CORE!!!!

Hi,

About two weeks ago i built my new pc with an Athlon X2 4400+, 1gb Kingston Hyperx etc.etc.

Since then iv got everything setup nicely and to my liking. Unfortunaly MY 1GHZ celeron played mp3's better than this thing. When i try to play a mp3 through WMP my cpu usage bumps up to 75%, task manager states WMP is using 50% cpu time (really that means its using 100% of one x2 4400+ core) and my memory usage bumps from 45% to 75%. My page file usage also goes up from 420mb to 750mb.

This cant be right. Even on my old pc, which was %*#& i could play mp3's whilst doing something else. This pc becomes unusable whilst trying to use the program. Iv never had problems with this program before, so i dont know whats going on.

btw im using the integrated auto on the Asus A8N Premium, are am running windows on two 250gb Samsung P120's setup in raid 0.

Has anyone else the same problem with WMP? What music player is it reccomended i switch to if this is really WMP's fault

any help would be appreciated,

INM8

Yep, iv got drivers for everything, mobo, gpu, cpu and others. Only thing i acccidentally installed was the nvidia IDE drivers which people are said to have problems with, but i cant see how that would effect WMP performance.

what one would you recomend?

EDIT: Just tried played same mp3's with cyberlink power dvd 6 (not the ideal music player  , but the the test served its purpose). Using that, cpu usage never went higher than 01 in task manager, and it used about 2-3 mb's memory.

So i guess its either WMP or something thats interfering with WMP. I acctually liked WMP quite a bit, with its shell integration. Pity its playing up on this pc 🙁 , i dont know what it could be.

Any ideas on how to get to the bottom of this, or do you suggest i ditch WMP and go for somehting else? If so, what would you recomend?

You've never heard of Winamp or Foobar2K? Both are 10x the music player that WMP is. Infact the only time I use WMP is when I want to confirm if Zoomplayer is having issues loading a video file. But I barely do that anymore, because the latest version of Zoomplayer automatically checks your machine for proper codecs and lets you know when you are missing one.

Heard of winamp, never heard of Foobar2K; is that linux, or windows also? Just though i'd check what other people where using, cause iv never bothered to use winamp or any other music player because iv never had any problems with WMP before. Thanks for your suggestion though, ill try winamp. May be a codec thing though, because WMP still plays videos/divx fine 😕

wmp is garbage...i have nothing but troubles with it. "error downloading codec" blah blah blah...just get winamp or itunes

The problem is most likely caused by the directshow filter wmp chose to use to decode your files. Personally I use K-Lite Codec Pack and never have had a problem.
