My PC at work still has WinNT on it, which comes with Media Player 4.0 (SP6). I can't get it to stream audio samples from places like amazon.com, bestbuy.com, etc.

For example, from this page, when I try to play a track (.asx file), and it asks what I want to do, I select open and get the Open With apps list, I select mplay32, and get this error message:
Cannot determine the device type from the given filename extension.
I get the same error trying to play a WMP sample from amazon.com.

If this version is too old, what's the oldest version I could use, considering they're less bloated and intrusive than the newer versions? I have to watch what I isntall on this PC (not supposed to install anything). I've also tried Irfanview, but get an "Cant read file header. Unknown file format" error.

Without checking it out im pretty sure Media player classic is pretty much just the good ole media player, without the features from media player series 9. Series 9 is good, enhanced for XP, but if you goto the windows site you will be able to determing the best way to upgrade your media player for win NT, you might be able to get Windows media player series 9 for win nt but it wont have some of the enhancements that is has for XP, but im not sure.

Sorry I did not see your posts which followed mine, until now. I forgot to subsribe to this topic and received no email notices.

I don't kow what Media Player Classic is, but the link I cited is a Microsoft link. I would use it if you want to upgrade your Media Player.
