windows media player problem

WMP won't play an .mpg file from internet explorer. It will play other formats like .avi and .wmv, but not mpg. I just get an error window saying that windows media player has encountered problems and needs to shut down.
I can play .mpg files if I download them and play them off the hard drive, but not online.
WMP 9
WinXP pro with sp 1

any suggestions?

So you're problem resides with streaming only? I had this problem once, actually, and just uninstalled and reinstalled WMP 9.0 to resolve the issue.

hmmm, no go, same problem. Do you think it could be a codec thing?
