OK, I have had a long nightmare here that just gets worse and worse. My Win XP Pro system was built in July of 05 and is as follows:
Shuttle XPC SB83G5 Barebones Mini PC
Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz LGA 775 Processor
Corsair ValueSelect 1GB Dual Channel SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6800
Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-1633S
2x Western Digital Caviar 80GB SATA150 hard disks in a RAID 1
From the get-go I have had issues with Windows Media Player. If I play a video file sometimes there is no audio. That is rare. However, if I click ahead, as in click the bar at the bottom to move ahead in the file, the audio dropots out for about 10 seconds. If I click ahead again, the file starts playing super fast and never recovers. Typically the file freezes (if it's long enough).
I tried upgrading to WMP 10, but it got worse. I have tried using WinAmp or VLC, but they are really not very good and also have issues like this. Typically they just crash.
However, QuickTime Pro works flawlessly. Never ever a problem. Power DVD works good. My games all work fine. The system does not overheat. In fact, it runs quite cool. These shuttles are amazing in that regard.
Today I rolled back to WMP v9 and removed VLC, DiVX files, VLC and WinAMP.
EDIT, UPDATE 1 PM Eastern Time 1/23/06: OK, I updated my GeForce 6800 drivers and this has dramatically improved video in Windows Media Player 9. HOWEVER, I still lose audio every time I try to move ahead in a file.
I cannot figure out what drivers I have with this Suttle system, nor can I find any helpful driver info at their website.
I am not technical enough to do a completely new XP install. It's just too much for me.
What can I do? What is the problem?
