Windows media player for Solaris?

Microsoft has often claimed WMP is "part of the operating system" when trying to justify why they "needed" to bundle it with Windows, so it's a Windows-only product (but including CE, Embedded flavors).

There have been versions released for Mac OS X. Not sure how up to date it is these days though.

Yes, there have been periods when MS cared about other platforms, they used to even offer a version of Visual C++ for Mac development. It was a bit odd at the times when they were simultaneously claiming IE and WMP "needed" to be part of Windows but were OK as standalone apps on other platforms. Then they stiopped caring about anything but Windows.

WMP maybe, but not IE. IE (or rather MSHTML anyway) is used by lots of the OS to render HTML, places like the help system and explorer are probably the biggest two. So it really is necessary for some basic functionality now and there's nothing that I know of that makes MSHTML not able also be installed on another OS, it just wouldn't be required by the base system since it would be stupid for Apple to require a product made by another company in their base OS.

Although that very integration with windows annoys a good deal of users. some (read: firefox fanboys) just want to get rid of it completely, but are unable to in windows xp. heaven forbid they accidentily type a URL in an explorer windows

I do find it annoying, the benefits of having that stupid sidebar do not outweigh the annoyances it causes by hiding things from me and slowing down the file manager. The explorer HTML view is one of the first things I disable when I have to use Windows.

Yes, it is an old thread, but that link (made yesterday) is current. But, with VLC, WMP is yesterday's news.
