Windows Media Player..can it play AVI files ? and if so how ?

got some avi files and it says that it can't play...is there something that i need to download or install for this to work or do i need a specific avi player ?

well thanks for the reply but that didn't work, installed the latest divx codec and it still didn'twork on windows media player

i am trying to run a avi file

andyone know if there is a avi to mpeg type converter program ?

Make sure that AVI is selected in Tools --> Options --> Formats. Also download the latest Codec from Microsoft here.

leeland, the problem is probably not windows media player itself, but a problem with the installed codecs. An avi is not a standard format in the way that an mpeg is. It is used as a wrapper for video information using many methods of compressing and decompressing (codecs). Probably, you do not have the correct codec for that file. Try to find out what it uses, then download the appropriate codec.

Even if you did get an avi -> mpeg program, it would still require the correct codec.

Might be a bad file. I have several .avi files that do not play under Windows Media Player 7.1 but do under "The Playa." And vice-versa, download The Playa at www.divx.com. Make sure you have the newest Windows Media Player (Start -> Windows Update), and you should be set.
