Windows Media Player 9 crashes whenever trying to view *.wmv files

I've been having this problem for a while, it was slightly annoying at first but I'd like to fix it now.

If I try to open a WMV file, the player comes up and before it can play, it just crashes to the desktop.

AVI/DVD/Audio CDs work fine.

I can't find where to uninstall media player anywhere, I did reinstall over top of it and checked it for updates but neither fixed the problem.

Any ideas?
