after trying VLC i liked it at 1st, but i have found that it wont play some videos properly, either it runs with no picture or no sound when certain codecs (that are installed) are used.

Ill give media player classic a shot.

and to the why use WMP9 anyway? well no one has suggested anything that works better yet... if i could get around the driver problems it is clearly the best all-in-one video player.

Link? What happened to using Google? inmatrix.com
It plays all formats except for Real, and streaming windows media. It should do Real, but I haven't gotten it to work (OTOH, I'm not using anything newer than Realplayer 8, due to having to sign up for something free and get annoying BS even after that).
It has a playlist, and works much more often for me than WMP.
