Windows Media Player 11 xVid playback problems

Whenever I play an xvid-encoded .avi file in windows media player 11, it has very bad pixelating/bleeding. However, when I play it in creative media source, it plays back fine. I want to be able to play the videos through Windows Media Center (2k5), which runs off of windows media player "engine".

I have installed the xvid codec, as well as ffdshow and divx. I'm not sure what else I can do, am I doing something wrong?

(It also plays fine on VLC Media Player)

I would mainly just like to get the WMP player to play them back fine so I can make use of Media Center

Thanks in advance!

WMP sucks. There are a lot of stuff that look messed up on it but play fine in other players.

Uninstall DivX because you don't need it unless you're encoding stuff. Might as well uninstall XviD as well if you're not encoding. Just let FFDShow decode everything.

WMP11+ffdshow (libavcodec) here, everything works just fine.

In WMP, Tools->Options->Performance, 'Full Video Acceleration' is enabled, right?
Reset all the settings in your driver's Overlay tab to default?

This is obviously not true... They get the same picture from the decoder, but how it displays that picture on the screen is dependent on the player.

Right. I'll try uninstalling everything but ffdshow tonight to see if it works. However, I think I remember doing that combination, and it not working. It's so strange how WMP hates my xvid files, yet VLC and creative have no problems :(

+1 - Playback with strange fragments, especially green blocks can be a function of bad video drivers.

Edit - turn down acceleration and see if the same thing happens. That is usually a good test for video driver issues for this type of issue.

I'm having the same problem after building my Shuttle XPC yesterday. I have a 7600GS running Forceware 93.71 on Windows MCE 2005. The problem is I didn't do a clean install--I just moved my cpu, memory and HD from the old box to the new one, but I was running a 9800xt before.

Everything else is working fine and I have no issues with booting, games or anything else. I used ATI's driver uninstall before moving the HD, and my Nvidia drivers seem to be installed fine. But no matter what I do with the overlay controls, I get grainy, blocky/bleedy video when playing xvid encoded content (haven't really tried other formats yet since I encode everything with xvid.) I tried removing all instances of ffdshow, xvid and divx, killed all the user settings and removed a few extra registry keys, but nothing helped (maybe I needed to reboot? Will check it today...)

Could there be an issue with PureVideo? I'm new to the whole Nvidia scene so I have no idea how to check whether its working or if its even installed. I will try fiddling with the hardware acceleration control when I get back.

LeadTek 7600GT AGP Video Card with default drivers (ones from CD).

(I tried installing the newest nvidia drivers, which did not work properly, so I had to uninstall them)

Great.....now when i go to play full screen videos they play with lag. Lag meaning, it looks like im playing a game with a really low FPS.

It gets more lagged the bigger i make the video window. Hence, full screen is the worst....

Dang it!!!

Decelerated, right? But does it clear up the video issue otherwise? Then it sounds like the drivers. Cannot help you on what works best with your card. Sorry.

Nope, doesnt clear up tearing/bleeding issues....just a very slow picture (looks like lagging FPS...but on a video).

Any ideas? Still cant get this working right :(

btw...VLC now does the low FPS lagging thing when fullscreen too, as well as the creative player =/

Basically, install and it works with almost anything out of the box (even though there really is no box :p)

It uses its own codecs so the ones installed on your machine shouldn't have any affect on VLC.
If you still have problems then it's probably the source.

Edit:
I guess it helps to read posts in the thread.

If VLC didn't work, try using MPC along with ffdshow (no enhancements, just as a decoder). It might work.
Or if MPC has an internal xvid codec, try that.

You can always try it on a modded xbox :)
I've found that XBMC on a modded xbox is the best thing for playback of any kind.

Only works if you have a xbox though :p

Edit2: If it plays fine in VLC, then just use VLC I guess.

Edit3: If it lags going to fullscreen in VLC, then MPC+ffdshow (with resize, among other filters) might be able to help not only make it work, but make the resize look better.
