HP DV8408 Pavilion

I have the Synaptics driver for my touchpad for the laptop. During setup, Synaptics states the following:

Setup can install the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver only for pointing devices that
Windows has already recognized.

If you have plugged in a pointing device since the last time you rebooted, you must
click "Cancel" and reboot your machine. After Windows has detected your new
pointing device and installed a standard mouse driver for it, you should run this
installation program again.

The only thing i have in Device Manager is a HID Compliant mouse. I also have an unknown device which i believe to be the touchpad.

In Windows under the control panel, under mouse properties -> device settings, it shows Synaptics Pointing Device - v8.3.8 16Jun06 [the driver HP advises to use]. On this tab, for Devices: [which should have a listing of pointing devices] it's blank. Theres nothing there.

So again it appears windows is not recognizing the device, so synaptics can't utilize the driver?

Not sure where to go from here. Hoping someone can relate to this issue. I do not have any recovery disks, etc. for this notebook.

I just checked my HP Pavilion dv1000 and the Synaptics drivers are all located in C:\Program Files\Synaptics. It shows up in Device Manager as a subset of "Mice and Other Pointing Device."

There is a CD that came with the notebook - "HP Application and Driver Recovery." The Touchpad is quite a large file and has a SETUP.EXE routine. Would not that be available on the HP website?

In COntrol Panel, try the "Add Hardware" routine.
