Windows Media Center 2005: Proper install sequence of 3 discs?

I have the 3 cd clear case Windows Media Center 2005 software (Microsoft Part Number is X11-35556).

I have successfully installed it in past, but occaisionally get a random crash and restart while watching tv.

I used the disc 1, disc 2, disc 1, disc 3 (?) sequence previously.

I have a Hauppauge 950 usb hybrid tuner and the IR wireless Microsoft keyboard and remote (though I use hardwired keyboard and mouse during install).

I found this rather involved thread (Link) about proper install sequence, but was wondering if someone can succinctly boil it down to it's essentials, particularly regarding HDTV tuner so I don't get those random crashes when I try and reinstall everything from scratch.

Also, at what point should I run Windows Update to bring operating system up to current, after 1 2 1 3 above, after drivers have been installed, before or after hdtv tuner has been connected, etc?

Thanks in advance!

I remember this -- and it was a pain. And the problem: Because it was a pain, I never did it again once I had it set up properly. So . . . . I can't tell you. The only thing I remember: at one point, it prompts you for a "service pack" disc, so that I and others discovered after some trouble that it meant "disc 2." I'd reach for a "service pack 2 (or 3 whatever) disc and foul up the installation.

Hope someone else can give you a better answer . . . .

Good luck --

You could snag a DVD copy somewhere ... ( That is what I have ) and you don;t have to worry about the disk number or sequence.

I can't tell you "exactly what's on each CD"... But I can tell you how to install it.
1. Boot to the Media Center Disk 1...
2. When it asks for a different disk, insert the Media Center Disk 2... After a bit it will ask you to put another disk in - That disk will be Disk 1.
3. Once you get into Windows - Install the drivers you need for the chipset and network access.
4. Search Microsoft's website for .Net and the 1.1 Service pack, then download and install both (frankly it should have been put on Disk 3 - but that's not the way it is so... we live with it)
5. Install the small program off the third disk. (.Net must be installed or this will not work!) But Media Center won't function without this installed.

Then install all the other stuff.
It's much easier if you have already downloaded the right files to install .Net 1.1. Microsoft seems to have intentionally made it difficult to install this version of XP as it is only available in an OEM version.

Would Roll Up 2 include steps 4 and 5?

And / or can I just keep clicking Windows Update after chipset drivers to get everything else properly installed?
