Windows Media and Quicktime for DVD player?

How can I make my windows media files, quicktime etc files into a format which can be burned to cd-r for use in a dvd player. Just started burning and would love to see some of my files on the big screen. Any help would be appreciated as I am a relative newbie to this process.
