WIndows ME wants MS-DOS 8.00

Here is what happened... I kept on getting GPFs and BSODs and weird errors and then I just couldn't start up. So then I booted up from my Win98 floppy and ran SYS C: So that went well but now it's telling me it will only run on MS-DOS 8.00. I had ME before but never bothered to make an ME floppy... I get a Win98 startup screen now though. How can I salvage my drive?

www.bootdisk.com has a choice of two boot floppies for
winME you can download. one is to boot from dos6 or 7
and the other is to boot from another OS. But i
tried both and neither could boot from dos so maybe
i was doing something wrong and i hope u have better luck
than i did.

Using the SYS command, you copied all your startup files from the floppy onto the C: drive. The only way to really fix it would be to make an Emergency Boot Disk on a WinME machine and do the exact same thing, ie, run SYS C:.

If you don't know anyone running WinME or have access to another WinME machine, you can use one of those Real DOS-mode patches that are around on the net. That *should* in theory fix it but it's more of a hack rather than completely restoring WinME like it was before.

Real DOS-Mode Patch for WinME

Follow the instructions and hopefully that'll help.
