I'm running Windows ME at home and for quite some time I've had it set up for two different users. One for me and one for my wife. Suddenlyl Saturday mornong she told me that all of her settings were gone. Her desktop had changed, internet explorer was trying to access a non-existent dial up connection (I've got cable now), etc. When I log onto the computer under my user name, everything is fine. So I saved the folder that contains all of her favorites, desktop icons, etc onto my desktop and deleted her user profile. Then, for good measure, I rebooted the computer. Once I logged back in, I attempted to create a new profile for my her by going through the control panel and setting it up that way. Nothing would happen. Her name would show up in the box, but when i tried to log in under her name, it would just go to the default settings again. so I logged back in under my name and created a user profile under my son's name. No problem. it took a few minutes and copied all of the files. When I log in under his name everything is just as it should be. I'm able to modify all of his settings and they don't effect anything else.

So why is it that the computer suddenly stopped recognizing my wife's user name, "Jody"??!! Did some file get deleted? Please let me know what you think.

Did you check for viruses? I know there is one popular one out there right now that tries to dial out expensive phone numbers with your modem.

I forgot to mention that. yes, I did scan for viruses using McAffee latest downloadable version (I forget the actual version, I'm at work right now) and came up with nothing.

I did have a trojan about 4 days before this happened. It was pretty harmless, though. It was one of those that automatically changes your homepage to some crappy search engine. But I successfully removed that. She had used the computer at least once after the removal and it worked fine. Then suddenly on Sat morning it wouldn't work anymore.

She thinks the computer is upset with her because she doesn't want me to buy a new video card for the "stupid computer".

"Who's stupid now?", said the compter. :D

Yeah, I had it down to where I was the only user of the computer, restarted it and checked again. I was still the only user. At that point I attempted to copy my profile (through the control panel) and create a new one for her. No go. her name shows up, but no files are copied. I immediatly try a new name and it works just like it's supposed to. so for some reason it's just not recognizing the letters J-O-D-Y.

getting rid of ME at this point is not an option. I've never had a problem with it before and there just aren't enough changes for me to switch to XP.

ME is the biggest POS out there and thats telling it how it is. I can't stand it and the list of problems is endless. You need to switch to XP or 2k. ME is the reason your computer does random unexplainable things. Microsoft has stopped supporting it. Any operating system is better than ME.

Damn it.....:|

well, thanks for the help. For now I'm just gonna work around the problem, but I'll keep that advice in mind if something else happens.
