Hello,
I was just wondering why my computer (Pentium III running Windows ME)is taking so long to shutdown. It runs very nicely and has no problem restarting. Also it shuts down fine in safe mode which makes me think that it has something to do with a device driver or process that is running in the background.
I recently cleared a ton of spyware off the computer and updated the computer with windows updates. This situation makes me question whether this long pause has anything to do with the "Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package" update which suposedly allows a delay in the shutdown process.
Any suggestions about how to get arround this problem or fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

my windows 98 machine is doing the same thing, havent figured it out yet on that one. But what you can try is run msconfig and turn off items 1 by 1 and see which is casusing the problem.

Usually caused by a misbehaved driver or background app that refuses to shut down in a timely manner. Trial and error. Disable any unneccesary items in the startup tab of MSCONFIG.

If you are still running any version of MS Windows 9X which Windows ME is you really need to get rid of the O/S.

PackMule - That doesn't really address the issue. It may be dated, but WinME works fine. And since he has a Pentium 3 it may not be worthwhile spending $100 to upgrade to an OS that's going to dramatically slow his system down.
