LEXMARK Z51 printer

First things first. I have already been to the Lexmark and microsoft sites. Microsoft technet does recognize this error but only has a solution for the Cannon multipass printer which of course I don't have. I have posted a new incident request on the Microsoft site. I have removed and reinstalled the drivers for the Lexmark z51 from the lexmark site several times. On the surface although Lexmark says the driver is for 95,98 and ME it appears to be the exact same set of files that were posted in February 2000 for Windows 98 SE.

The error occurs on the second print job sent to my printer.
I have tried all combinations of properties for the printer (spool after first page, raw, PMjournal and print directly to printer. The error occurs no matter what combination I use. I have disabled the buffer mode and enabled it on the lexmark control program.
When I get the error my PC invariably locks and I have to reboot.
So, any ideas that you might have while I wait for Lexmark and Microsoft will be appreciated.

The first thing you should do it get rid of that USB connection (you did not say how you were connected). If you don't already have one, get a high quality (IEEE-1284)parallel cable. I had all kinds of odd (on/off) problems with the Z-51 and USB connection.

As for the drivers, they are really tricky to get re-installed correctly (Lexmark). I would first uninstall them, then search your hard drive for: lex*.* and delete all the associated files/folders (no need to check the registry). Then...

Double click the newest downloaded drivers (1.0.20), and make sure you uncheck the box that says "run setup.exe after extraction" (or something to that extent). It's very important you only extract the files to a folder (default is: C:\LEXZ51). You do not want it to automatically install it's self!!!! Then...

Go to: Start>Settings>Printers and double click "add printer," then choose "have disk" and point it to the newly extracted folder (ie. C:\LEXZ51). You should see two .INF files!
lexusb.inf and lxropr.inf.

If you want to use a USB cable, use = lexusb.inf
If you want to use Parallel, use = lxropr.inf

By default, the Lexmark drivers loads both sets of drivers (as do most all companies), and you want to eliminate that if you can.

Since it's not as if you don't have enough memory, only other thing it could be is the Windows spooler (unlikely)

enter BIOS, go to 'Integrated Peripherals' and change 'Onboard Parallel Mode' to 'SPP', if it's already 'SPP' then change to ECP/EPP. try all settings!

I have the same problem. If I reinstall the Lexmark, most of the time it is OK. Have had other problems with ME and will go back to 98.

Here is an update on my printer problem. On my ABIT Bh6 rel. 1.01 I changed the printer port from PPP to ecp/pcp. On reboot windows found a new port and installed drivers for it. However, when I try to print I get a new error message "data area to small". Similar results occur now with ECP and other modes. With PPP my printer is not found.
I am considering putting in the ME CD and reloading all the operating system. This will restore things (windows ME that is) to what it was when I upgraded from Windows 98 SE.

I will check tonight for additional ideas before I proceed.
I do strongly feel that part of the problem is that the drivers on the Lexmark site are the same ones released in February for Windows 98 SE.
It is not the same as ME.

If you installed WinMe over Win98, then yes, it can't hurt to try that. But I will also go on to say that most of the WinMe problems out there can be eliminated if one was to "format c:" before upgrading.

I don't feel it's a problem with the Lexmark drives. I have WinMe (clean install), Z-51 (2/14/00 drivers), Abit mobo (BX-6r2)... without these problems. Actually, I have found it to be more reliable since I upgraded to WinMe.

If anything, it's driver conflict <or> driver installation <or> the way WinMe installed "over" Win98 (good chance) <or> corrupted downloaded driver <or> cable... there is not much else it could be.

FWIW: The latest drivers for 95/98/Me are all the same! The only difference are the Win2K (drivers and firmware).

Have you called 1-800-LEXMARK.... They go out of their way to help customers, and if you get a senior tech.... your problems are over ;)

I've given up on my current hard drive. I cannot get ME to load properly. Yes, I have tried system restore even my Rescue ZIP. I did originally install ME as an upgrade. I have purchased a new 30 gig Ultra AT-100 and I will load ME cleanly tonight. YEs I called lexmark! They were of no help. They admitted that the driver for the Z51 on their site is the same one released for 98SE in Feburary. I also replaced my BH6 Rel 1.01 with a VH6.
Hopefully I will have better results.

Ahhh... sounds like you bought one of those IBM GXP-75's... I have that with the Promise controller. Love it!

I bet it will work fine after the "clean install." Just make sure you follow my directions on how to install the drivers :)

Post back when done....
