I am building a new computer. I am using Windows 98SE on my computer now. What operating system should I put on my new computer? Windows ME or Windows98SE?

I'd hold off on ME at least until some of the kinks get worked out with patches/updates, etc. I'm running on ME now, and it's not bad at all, except for a couple of irritating quirks. You still have a couple more months to get the $49.99 upgrade.....

I agree with Heretik. Not only because of the kinks, but because I have a better understanding of 98SE kinks than the ME kinks right now. My objective of getting a new system up & running first is best suited to 98SE. But, I once I was satisfied I'd reboot with ME just for fun...

Try both to see which you would like more (if you have both OSs). If you only have win98, your money can be well spent else where.

I just put a PC together - have decided for Me and I'm not regreting my choice.
All PC vendors are shipping their machines with Me installed.
People are always sceptic about new software version, but I kinda like to move on.

At the risk of stiring up the pot, here is my two cents.

The answer is it depends.

My Abit K7A with Radeon 32MB card runs much better with WIN/ME then it does WIN/98 SE. With ME on this box I can get everything running with excellent relability with only adding a few driver updates. I did not have to add the VIA 4in1 drivers and the system is rock solid. Same system with 98SE was not as stable and I could only run the Radeon at 2X even after trying all the tricks from the Rage3d forums.

My ASUS K7M with ASUS 3800 TNT2 runs better with WIN/98SE. Under WIN/ME the system was stable for a while, but then the system would start slowing down and the mouse pointer would get jittery and hard to control.

I have installed both OS's on both systems about 4 times each, and this is how I have currently left them.

I installed WinME yesterday and it's working just as well as Win95 was even though I don't understand why hibernate is not working.
I don't see WinME as a problem because it's based all on win9x code anyway... people are first denigrating WinME because it's not a big enough leap from Win98SE, then they are like implying how different and unstable it must be! Like, a little inconsistency around here guys?

I have a stable Win98SE system. I tried the ME upgrade and had a problems the biggest was a lag. Did a format and clean install of ME and still had the lag. I went thru this installation saga for a week and gave up. After more than ten attempts with ME I returned to 98SE. I do have a K7M mobo.

There was an article in a well known Consumer magazing (page 65 Oct. 2000 issue). That asks

<< Is Windows Me for you? >>

. Basically, it states that Me boots a few seconds faster than 98 unless you're running a 1GHz Athlon. It was 10% slower than 98 at routine work. But it's supposed to be more stable (something they weren't able to test). It's Multimedia, Home Networking, and Enhanced Internet are items you can download free from Microsoft and work with W98.
It also mentions what others have already pointed out. That any upgrade can bring unanticipated problems and frustrations, such as resolving a conflict between Me and hardware or software you already use.

In the last few days I have taken delivery of a new computer from one of the the Big vendors. Windows ME was pre loaded ( recovery disc provided ).Now, my Microsoft Force feedback pro joystick doesn't connect. Flight sims are my thing and now this latest fastest computre can't fly a thing!!
So,if you are into games- look out.
Thank you Microsoft for providing a new OS that knocks out one of your own products!
BTW - If anyone has a solution I would be obliged!
