Windows ME network connectivity problems

CraigRT

There is a guy where I work that is having problems connecting to some parts of our network, and I have asked other people and they are reporting no problems of connectivity.. conveniently this is the only winME PC.. (YAK) But I can't format his computer and put another OS on it. (damn) so I gotta know from you guys what u think the deal is.. basically sometimes he can connect to network drives, sometimes he can't and if he waits for a few minutes he'll be able to, sometimes even if he waits a while and restarts, etc, he still can't.. it's really strange but that's life with ME I'm told.

SO what do u think?? and settings I should be looking for?? any tips? I am really not sure about what could be going on, i've heard some bad things about ME's networking capabilities and am led to believe this is just the OS's fault.. but hopefully someone can tell me different, that is why I am here asking this.

Thanks for anyone who can help.. if you need any specs of the system I'll get them on request as I don't know them right now.

Not enough info...

What are you using to log into the network? MS Client?

How much experience do you have with this sort of thing? Are you a tech there? Are you using TCP/IP for network protocol, is the network primarily a windows NT network, is he logging onto a Domain or a workgroup, etc....

What do the protocols look like that are binded to his nic card?

Have asked the user "What would you do if your WinME OS becomes corrupted and I have to re-install it from scratch?" Because you'll probably have to do this sooner or later...ME is crap...

Why can't you format the computer?

Win2k / XP is superior, get him on that...much easier for a network.

I wanted to put him onto 2000 but its a laptop and it came with ME and all this trash already installed..
U can't change someone, he wants ME cause it's already there and working.

It's a P3-850 laptop from HP and it's using an on-board ethernet controller of i dunno what kind, TCP/IP, Client for MS networks logon. it's allll the same settings as any NT/9x box and they are all problem free. and yeah I know ME is crap and i figured it was pretty much it's fault just because it sucks so much!!! :disgust:

so as I say.. configurations are the same throughout the building and the ME rigs are the only ones with problems thus far really... (had one other one, went to win2000 on it thankfully) - so that may be proof enough the dude has to live with it cause the other PC had it's problems with this kinda jazz too...

well i dunno.. what ya think??
