windows ME makes all files read only

ok so heres the situation:

my neighbor owns a preschool...they computer they were using was an old celeron 5 years old and it died. I backed up all the documents they needed and burned it to a disc. this computer had win ME on it

They have another old computer that the kids use for small games, but they are now using that computer until they get a new one. this computer also has win ME on it.

When all the files were transfered they were all marked read only..some 300 documents. I gave them a temporary work around for the documents they needed today.

Could the cd have caused the documents to be read only? Usually they don't become read only when I move documents from cd to desktop.

is there any easy way to change all the files back to normal or would I have to change them manually?

thanks for the help

Assuming this is on the hard drive, open up Explorer, browse to where the documents are, using the mouse, do a Select All (ie, highlight all of the files), then right-click and choose Properties. One of the Attributes will be checked as Read Only - take away the checkmark and hit Apply.

I hate when 98/ME does that with files copied of a CD, I'm so used to using WinXP these days that I take for granted the removal of the read only attribute when the files get copied.
