I'm having problems running scandisk and degrag on my windows me
box. I cntrl-alt del all the programs closed that are running then run
scandisk. It keeps starting over no matter what. the same for defrag.

Can anybody tell me why this is happening and how to make it stop restarting?

Boot to the DOS prompt and change directories to C:\Windows\COMMAND.

Type in SCANDISK.EXE and hit <ENTER>.

This will run in DOS when it won't run in Windows or shelled out to DOS.

Once this has been successfully accomplished, then run Windows Defrag from within Windows and configure it to only defrag the files. This will work when a full optimize/defrag won't. All this is assuming you don't have anything like Norton System Works.😎
