When playing counter - strike my hard disk will thrash, lagging the game for me when playing on my cable modem.

Is there any way to minimise or correct the thrashing.

If you can afford it, I found that games like CS and Q3 run w/o HD acessing all the time when I upgraded to 256MB of memory. Other than upgrading you may want to turn down some of the detail settings, IMO playing with 16 bit instead of 32 does wonders.

Here's what I do to avoid thrashing. It has to do with Windows changing swap file size on-the-fly.

I set Windows Cache settings to TWICE the size of physical ram, in your case, 256 megs. Set Min and Max to the same number (256megs) and set your machine to "Network Server" Reboot and see if that helps. More ram will definitely help. I would say 256 is the minimum now-days.

Thanks for that !

I just want to make sure im doing this right.

For the ram settings, do i do that in the virtual memory in the system control panel, setting min and max to 256 meg.

Where do i do the network bit.

The reply about increasing the page file by twice the amount of ram that you have is incorrect. Read this it will tell you how to go about it.
