HI...my stepdad is putting my computer together for me since he's done it before. he said i need to get an operating system (Windows ME full version install...not the upgrades). He's not that familiar with oem vs retail for this, but thinks oem might be just as good. I know it's alot cheaper to get it oem, but wondering if you guys can give me the pros and cons on the two. Also, does anyone know where i can get the best price online?...thanks, vroom

check the forums here (for sale and trade). The OEM version is just fine...there is no difference in the actual OS...but make sure the OEM version you get is NOT just for certian computers...ie DELL, HP, Compaq, ect...those are normally restore disks and wont work on any other system than thiers... :)

if you have a 98 or 98 se cd you can go to wal-mart and buy the promotional step-up and just do a clean install,it will ask for proof of having 98 during install, the step up is only 49.00,i used that on both my systems and i have no problems at all

the WinME upgrade cd would be fine for you. I have upgraded a bunch of machines that have had Win95 on them, and all the installs went smoothly. If you plan on installing WinME on a fresh new hd, the upgrade cd can still work, provided that you provide it with your Win98 cd when it asks you to insert it.
