Windows ME (at least part of it) doesn't seem to be letting me hear system sounds. Audio DOES seem to work for most applications, but when I try to go to the "Sounds and Multimedia Properties" Window, the "Sound Volume" section is greyed out along with the little "play" triangle next to the wave file name window.
When I go to the Audio tab, the playback and record device windows are blank. (MIDI window does have something). When I select "SBLive! Wave Device" for each of the blank windows, it seems to accept this choice when I hit "apply", but when I close this and open it up again, these windows are blank again. On the Voice Tab, the Prefered devices for voice playback and capture are also both blank. When I select my sound card here, it accepts my settings UNTIL I hit apply, which blanks them out again. (When they ARE selected, I can even do the voice test... but of course everything disappears when I hit apply.)
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Sound Blaster drivers a few times, and have reinstalled Windows, but I still get the same thing. This used to work, but I am not sure exactly when it stopped working. I noticed the problem after Windows media player hung a few times while playing a CD. I don't know if this is related.
Also, when I go to "System" settings, all indications are that the driver is working properly.
I am using:
ASUS A7V133 MB
nVidia GeForce 2 GTS card
SoundBlaster Live! Value OEM audio card (slot 3)
"Generic" Win Modem
100baseT LAN card
USB printer, joystick, rudders, scanner
Viewsonic P225 which includes USB hub.
Windows ME
Thanks for any suggestions.
