Windows ME Boot Problem.....

A friend called me saying that there was a power outage at school and after power was back on, she started her computer but it would not completely boot up. She said it would boot up until the point where you can enter a username and password (which she uses). After that point, the system hangs and a ctrl-alt-del shows that MPREXE is not responding. It happens every time she boots up, except when I had her boot into safe mode. I searched on the MS site and found this, but renaming the user profiles did not work and she says that she cannot see any hardware conflicts. Since I'm not there (and I'm not on Win9x so I can't even see the same menus/windows as her), I have no idea what the problem could be. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for other things I could have her try. Thanks in advance for help.

What happens if she skips the network logon?

Mabye her NIC is bad. You could have her try taking it out and booting to see if it goes in.

It's not the network logon (she doesn't use it), it's the user logon. It's similar to the log on for 2k/XP except its implementation in 9x is pretty much useless (because you could just push esc to bypass it), but for some reason she still uses it.
