Windows ME and free internet problem

upgraded my friends computer from win98
to winME.now none of his free internet
providers get past the login point.
aol works by dialup but tcip is not until
he gets the free isp working.also in aol
Internet explorer is not working.
 
I seem to have to problem in part. My netzero works fine, but I was using my 1nol.com account and it will not get me past the login. It says my user name or password is wrong, but it is correct because it was working before I upgraded. I thought it was their problem, but I guess not.

Might try this: update to latest IE 5.5 build 5.50.4308.2900, which is newer than the WinME shipping version.
Also run registry cleaners, such as iolo System Mechanic, and /or Ontrack System Suite: LOTS of junk left in registry even after "clean install".
