Long story short....

An older family member brings his PC down for tune/repair etc. Still running Windows ME:confused: I have to go around through the run command to get into anything because I keep getting the following message...

"Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a rsult, the page may not display correctly"

I am going to replace the hard drive (with a new one) and put a fresh Win XP install to bring him out of the stone age. However, I am going to slave this drive (after backup) so that he can still access his documents and files. So I would ideally like to have this ActiveX thing among others cleared up.

Thanks:)

I used to get thoe messages and if I remember, they were in the security settings in Outlook Express

So if you are putting XP on the drive, then that will be gone..
(I assume you are going to at least do a format if you do not write all zeros)

Clear out all of those viruses first. Make sure your new XP install is fully up-to-date and protected with a good anti-virus program before you connect the ME drive and try to read the files again.

Also get a good antispyware package and make sure this is active before giving it back for more abuse...

When IE is so hosed up in 98 and ME, I've found a good method is to use IE eradicator to completely remove IE and then reinstall it with the latest version. I have IE6 on a cd, so after it has been removed I can install it without getting on the internet.

One caveat, some systems complain on reinstall that it needs to find a file. That locaton is here:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Full Download for IE post

I'll give that a try. Only thing is, I can open anything without that Active X message appearing/popping up. Cant open "My Computer", cant open "Control Panel", etc.
