My friends and I lan all of the time, and we always have the issue of a windows 98 first edition machine not being able to see a windows ME machine. I've read the faqs and done everything I could find to try and make the machines see eachother with no luck. So, does anyone know if there is a specific issue of 98 FE machines not being able to see ME machines?

I have alot of problems at work with 9x machines spiratically not beeing able to see the network, the quick and dirty solution for us is this
start > run > command
ipconfig /release_all
ipconfig /renew_all
(of course this is if you are running off a DHCP server, or NAT router with DHCP, etc.)
Do what you can to erase any network cache...

If, however, your problem is that you just can't see one box, then that is wierd. Is the Me box visible to other computers? other than the 98FE box?

It also wouldn't hurt for you to install netBeui as a protocal...

Can you ping? If you can ping it's probably an issue with Net Neighborhood, which is the worst excuse for network display I have ever seen. If you can ping, then try pinging the computer name, if you can ping that as well than NN probably is the culprit.

More often than not, if you have connectivity (pinging, gaming, broadband sharing success etc..) but can't find the NetBIOS name in NN in a Windows /ME/9X environment, it's a master browser issue. Not always of course but pretty common. Usually you can still use the UNC name from the Run command or use the find/search computer menu. If you must use NN, a pitiful excuse for a name resolution and share browser tool, then disabling master browser function on all but one machine on the LAN many times will clear up the problem. Done from the properties of File and Printer sharing in network properties.

Since the 98 machine isn't on the network now, I can't check if I can ping it. However, both pcs have netbeui installed. Also, all other machines on the network can see the ME box.
