does anyone here know a simple method of converting MCE recordings into AVI or any other popular format that can then be compressed? thanks.

MCE = Media Center Edition?

That's not a video format or compression right? What kind of video file is it?

yeah MCE records into a specific format... im not at home right now so i dont know for sure but its something like .ms-dvr or something like that.

Walk on over to www.thegreenbutton.com and there are a few articles on how to do exactly that. There's a few programs that will do the DV-MCE to WMV format in about real time on a modern (2400 mhz or so) CPU, and will easily batch/queue jobs, so start your conversion at night, and have all your files converted the next day. Works very well, and turns 3GB files into 700MB or so files that look very good.
