windows loads only if XP cd in drive after adding hardware

I just built someone a computer last night, with the ECS K7S5A and a duron 1ghz. the computer works just fine, BUT, if i install a new piece of hardware, it posts, i see the winXP pro screen with the blue bar thing, and then it fades to black, and justs sits there. but it works FINE if i put the XP cd in the drive and start up. understand that if i turn the comp off and do not install anything, no need for the CD. This even proved true when all i did was plug in speakers!! i even tested to see what would happen if i took the new hardware out and tried to start up w/o the CD, and it wouldn't. Basicaly, once i put something new in it, i have to start up with the CD in the drive JUST for that time, after that its fine. I have all updated drivers, and all winXP updates. anyone know whats going on with this? thanks
