Windows loads a black screen with cursor...

I have a big problem here, hopefully someone has some idea whats wrong.
This is on my main computer so.

The computer turns on normaly, BIOS, lights go on, loads windows, ect... But when it gets to the windows XP log-in screen all I see is a black screen and the cursor. The cursor is movable and solid.

By moving around and watching the cursor change I've managed to log in, and I hear the sound and everything but the cursor is all I can see.

What do I do?

Last known configuration didn't work at all.

Some success with safe mode though.

1st time I used safe mode the color came back and I was in the process of restoring my
computer (system restore) then it just went black, color only lasted 1-2 minutes.

2nd time I used safe mode I was able to quickly restore my computer and it came back just fine, was about to try out my games when it went black again after only 1-2 minutes.

Someone please help me out, spent a lot of time and money on this.

Had a similar thing happen recently... in my situation I saw the boot screen then my screen read "no signal" and would display nothing.

I booted in safe mode, and removed the video card drivers. Restarted windows normally then reloaded the drivers, now it's working fine.

Sounds like your situation is a bit different, but if its a driver issue this might be worth a shot!

It sounds like your video card is failing. If you are in safe mode it shouldn't be using the driver you installed, so I have a feeling it's your vid card.

While searching these forums for similar problems I only found a few posts and one guy had a problem with dual monitors.
But one thing that caught my attention was that it was the same video card (MSI X1900XT)

Guess I should figure out the warrenty on this thing.

I ordered on Sept. 5th, 2006 and there's a 1 year warrenty so I'm good, finding all the parts might be hard though.
I'll play around with the drivers a bit tomorow too, just incase.

Also sometimes windows fails to boot (trys loading but ends up restarting and trying till it sucessfuly loads) which is a totaly differnt problem but I might as well fix at the same time. People say it's probobly bad ram.

The alternate cure for the black screen could be a hard-drive reformat.
And the alternate cure for the failure to boot could be a bios flash.
_ Both of those sound realy bad so I figure replacements would be better overall.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions feel free to post them.
