Got a new Dell Vista 64 box. Went to start up and unchecked messenger. Went to control panel and uninstalled. It seemed gone. Loaded Office 2007 Home and Student. Loaded service pack 1 update for the Office suite. This included a file that I brushed by but dont remember. I think it reinstalled messenger. I have since found that Windows Live Messenger is hiding in control panel uninstall under "Windows Live Essentials." When you click uninstall for Windows Live Essentials, it is supposed to give your several subsets to uninstall, one of which is Windows live messenger. When I click unistall\change on Windows live essentials, nothing happens. Do I need to log in as admin to do this? I am the only user on the computer. Please help me to get rid of Windows live messenger. I have googled everywhere and tried uninstall and disable routines. Nothing works. I will be happy to have it disabled or gone. I am sick of it opening up every time I boot up. Suggestions?

May not fix your problem of it not uninstalling it, but if you have messenger open, hit alt which will bring up the menu and go to tools options, you can remove the checkmarks by all the start up options under the general tab.

for the uninstall try right clicking on the programs and features and select run as administrator and see if that helps.

Dahak, thank you so much for taking the time to post the answer. I did the alt tools general tab thing. Unchecked log in messenger when I start up. The devil is gone. It was driving me nuts. Your answer was very concise. It amazes me that there was no such answer to be found after a google search. Thanks again.

I wouldn't uninstall it becaue it might bork some other apps on your computer. I would just run msconfig and goto the startup programs and disable it there.
