Thanks, Corky. From what I'm reading this isn't going to be an easy fix. Lots of theories, but no one seems to really know what causes this.

Well, the Microsoft asnwer seems to point the finger at 3rd party software, anti-virus in particular.

I have deliberately avoided LiveMail in my Win 7 systems. Good old Eudora Pro works great. So does T-Bird. I guess I basically don't trust "Live" anything these days.

Yeah, 3rd party software, which could be any number of things. I'm not in the mood to uninstall apps until I find the offending party. And at present I'm not running any AV software since I just did the fresh install. So that isn't the culprit.
Just uninstalled Windows Live Mail. Guess I'll go with another mail client and be done with it.

I had the same problem with Live Writer, I fixed it disabling the NVIDIA video card, running Live Writer for the first time - completing the setup - and then re-enabling the card.

See here for some more details.

Well, that's interesting. Never would figure that the video card would be the culprit. Still haven't figured out what is preventing WLM from opening. Maybe I'll take a look at my video card.

Windows Live Mail 2012.
I had a different issue where wlm after a new install of win7 , where it would connect ok just after I turned the system on , but if I went in to check for any new emails after +30 mins it would just hang for 10 mins.
-seemed to be a ie\ff flash issue [wlm uses your browser] that worked it self out over 2 months ,I gave up trying to track down the issue in case it came back.
-also some work emails I would send home would not open correctly.
-so I picked up office 2013 from work for $11.00 now running outlook 2013 to match my work stuff.
-no problems with outlook , works fine for me.

Newbie here. I've essentially the same problem. WLM opens then instantly closes again. Likewise, wlmail.exe appears in WTM\Processes, then disappears again--and the WLM Repair function will not work.
I'm trying to begin a fresh install & upgrade (from Win7/32 to 8.1/64) but, because I cannot get WLM to run I cannot export my messages--and I MUST retain my messages! That's really all I need at the moment.
Is there any way to retain my existing messages when uninstalling and reinstalling WLM?
Otherwise, is there any other way to export them?
(Where are they stored, anyway?)
