Windows keeps asking for "msnp32.dll," but it's there!

I just wiped my primary partition and reinstalled 98se. I cleared out the online services that windows installs automatically, but using the windows tab in add/remove programs. Now, when windows starts up, I get this message that windows can't find msnp32.dll and microsoft net work won't run I've extracted the file and put it in the system folder where it is on my other machine, but windows still keeps asking for it.

How can I tell it where it is, or nuke whatever is asking for it?

Also, I have no network neighborhood icon on my desktop (I did and auto install of 98 like a dummy), so how do I get one?

(maybe it's just me or something, but I don't know why is wondows would be looking for msn bits when I don't use it for anything)

I will preface this by saying I have no idea whether the following will help you. But...with several years experience working break/fix, field service, and Level II desktop support, I'll give you my best guess.

You can try to register the .dll file with regsvr32. Go to start, run. type "regsvr32 msnp32.dll" without the quotes. If the file is there but just isn't registered, this will fix the problem.

If not, you may have network settings in the registry that need values assigned to them. Setup your network with TCP/IP, etc. so you can use your ISP with this machne. That may fix the problem as well.

Here's another "I'm not sure if this will work", but this was posted on another forum in response to what sounds like the same problem:

"Microsoft Network" then i don't know what to tell you, but if you don't wont to use it
then "go to the START BUTTON at the bottom left-hand corner of your monitor",
"then go to SETTINGS", then "click on CONTROL PANEL"
(another window will open up) "then double click on NETWORK
(another window will open up", then you will see
"MICROSOFT FAMILY LOGON & CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS" (just the
first letter in each word will be capitalized)", "click on one of the two that are related to
microsoft and click on remove, do the same for the last one related to microsoft and
click on remove. Your network is not complete. Do you want to continue? I clicked on
no YOU can click on yes if you wont to. Once you click on no just press cancel on
the "Network" window the close the "control panel" window. AND YOU ARE DONE
WITH THAT ONE.

I've also read that you can fix this by reinstalling "client for microsoft networks", although I'm not sure how to do that myself.

Have you tried doing clean boot?
what about re-extracting that file from the cabs..

what about deleting the netstack then reapplying it.
and uninstalling the d.u.n?
