windows is using "fuzzy math"

ok, before i installed 3dstudiomax windows (win2k) said i was using approximately 4.4 gigs on my c drive. after i installed it, windows claims i'm using 5.8 gigs. i know this program is not that big!!! i have run chkdsk and nortion disk doctor and neither come up with an error on space reporting and i have tried rebooting to see if it corrected itself. now, if i open the c drive and go to edit-->select all (i have system and hidden files showing so it should get everything) and then go to file-->properties it shows that 3.95 gigs are used on the disk (that includes the slack space). i have a static 512meg swap file on this drive which isn't counted in this method so that brings the total used space to approximately 4.45 (which is about where it should be since the add/remove programs says 3dsmax is ~75megs). i also looked through all the folders on the c drive and have found no sudden changes and have found no new huge files. the point being, when i highlight the c drive (in my computer), windows says 5.8gigs are used, if i select the files it adds up to ~4.5 gigs (which is about right)...how did such a huge difference happen?

My guess would be your filesystem block size... you know that files can not be exact bytes big dont you?? They get rounded up to the nearest block size... and if you have say a 32K block size, then a 10byte file will actually take up 32K physical.
