"Windows is shutting down" random messages

So new build, E6400, Asus P5B-E mobo, Buffalo DDR2 667 Value ram, 7600GT, WD Sata 250HDD.

The computer will sometimes boot into windows fine and then just it shuts down randomly. The message "Windows is shutting down" comes up and it plays the shutting down sound. Shuts down all the programs properly. We try to boot it up after that and sometimes it will load, most of the time it just power cycles and never boots.

This is the 2nd motherboard, we had grounding problems but those have since been resolved. TAT is reading about 42/40c for the chip, under load it gets to about 60c using the stock cooler. This sounds like a heat issue but those temps are no where near the 85c threshold of the chip. Any ideas?

What OS and service pack are you using, e.g. WindowsXP Service Pack 1 or whatever.

Apparently you weren't clear in you OP since you never mentioned that you stress tested the system. 😛 Not to mention Memtest86+ is a DOS app, so if you're still rebooting it's a hardware issue that needs to be resolved. 🙂

If you think it's the pwr switch disconnect the lead from the mobo and use a metal object to jumper the 2 pins to turn it on. :light:

I did that and it's working. Going to run it overnight to make sure.
