I've been using a combination of cheap-o USB devices and crumby drivers (driverless IDE -> USB2.0 HD adapter, unofficial XBOX controller/memcard drivers with homemade USB adapter). Now Windows is botched again. I understand that mistakes are made by amateurs who create open-source drivers, and there are flaws with cheap Hong-Kong-made USB devices, but there is still no excuse for Windows becoming botched and confused in such a way that I can't undo it.
A phantom "USB Device" now appears in the device manager, even though all of my USB devices are installed and working. It still causes problems when I try to use some of my other USB devices. I have tried uninstalling all USB-related hardware (which is difficult, because my keyboard is USB) and the root/host controllers, but Windows XP still tries to install a phantom "USB Device" when the hardware is redetected.
What can I do?
Info:
Windows XP Media Center Edition
Logitech wireless mouse/keboard (charger/receiver connects to USB port)
Microsoft USB Remote Control/IR Blaster kit
Microsoft: Why should I be AFRAID to try test crappy hardware on my computer for fear of botching Windows? @#$%@#$!!!
