how do I know if my os is activated using a genuine key or just a crack version without going to windows update. I'm running win7..

Most pirates would only go for the higher tiers(Pro, Ultimate, Enterprise).

No, they go for all types.

Just check piratebay, its full of them (all types ranging from home premium to server)

(1) locate the product key on a genuine Microsoft label.
(2) verify the version of Windows on the machine matches the product key.
(2) use Microsoft's instructions to updated the installed OS's product key to what you have.

If you cannot complete any of those steps then you have a pirated version.

I recently purchased a laptop for someone off of ebay, arrived fine. The guy was nice and did a clean re-install of the OS before shipping it. I get it and it's Win7 Ultimate! Shook my head - there is a Pro COA right on the underside of the laptop, why he installed a pirated copy of Ultimate just before sending it to me I haven't a clue.
