My Dad is running W98 and has the constant problem of the internet connection window poping up. How can I shut this off? I know it's probably simple but I have looked everywhere.

Thanks

what is he doing when it pops up? is it literally just random.

i would say you should run the connection wizard and get it over with...

give me some info such as what the connection wizard says (i'm assuming you mean the generic internet connection wizard, but it could be something else) and does it come up when he tries to load web pages?

let me know and i'll help you out.

if it's the other kind of internet connection thing, the one that wants you to dial up, you could go start..settings..control panel...internet options...then under the "connection" tab choose "never dial a connection"....

this will stop that prompt from coming up, and you can just dial up with your regular DUN shortcut.

It seems to pop up at random. Like when he is loading software... Really can mess things up. I had him go to 'internet options' in control panel but he claims there was no such choice on his computer. He was unable to uncheck "never dial a connection". I guess I'll have him look again.

Thanks,

trust me dude, "internet options" exists under the control panel. another way to access this is to open up internet explorer, go to the "tools" menu on top, and scroll down to select "internet options" that way...and once it's open, like posted above, go to connections tab and choose "never dial a connection."

I was researching someone else's problem and ran across something that might apply to your dad...Some of these "adware" or "spyware" programs...the kind that download ads to specific software on your pc or they snoop on what you're doing online and report the sites you're surfing to to companies, etc. They run in the background and you don't even know about it most of the time. Anyway, one of these might be trying to dial out...he might want to download the freeware application called Ad-aware. It searches your drive for these programs and lets you know which ones it finds and gives the option of deleting them.

for me it was the task scheduler running the windows update every five minutes.

Sohcrates - He claims that his icon in CP says 'internet'. It has no 'never dial a connection' option. I am aware of what you describe, since mine is the same. Could it be he has the older version of W98?

Slikkster - We gave it a shot. He did have two files that turned up after the scan. They were from Doubleclick.net (?). He got rid of them but the problem still exists.

RPB - Shut task scheduler down completely also.

Thanks to all for your help.

Have him open up Internet Explorer, click Help at the top, and then click "About". Let us know the version number of IE we're dealing with.

he can also get to his internet options by going to TOOLS->INTERNET OPTIONS->CONNECTIONS

then find the "Do not dial" checkbox
