Windows installer won't install.

It won't install, just hangs at checking the system. I need it to get this application running. Anything I can do except reinstall windows?

I'll ask before someone else does is it a legitimate copy of windows?

Yes it is legit, it's an emachine that came with XP. I just did a non destructive system recovery and now when I try to install it it says,

KB89380v2 Setup Error

Setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf. Make sure the cryptographic service is running on this computer.

I checked and the service is running, I even stopped it and started it again and I still get the same error.

You might try the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from Microsoft's site. I had a "stuck" update that I seem to recall it got busted loose. Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0.1 also has a incomplete-update detection feature, search for "MBSA" at Microsoft's site for it.

Hmmmmm, the issue is that I looked at it and it said that it was not designed to remove the windows installer it'self which is where the problem is.

I tried some suggestions in this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 and now I'm back to where it just says checking system and doesn't progress any further.
