I'm running W2K. I had a problem with a virus scanner, and the tech help person suggested deleting thier two folders from the registry, uninstalling the product and reinstalling. Stupidly, I didn't backup registry. Now a Windows Installer Service could not be accessed message when I try to install or uninstall anything. I've tried several things. 1. Downloading from MS InstMsiW.exe. When run, it says the service is already there. 2. Downloading and running msicuu.exe. That generates the same installer error message. 3. using regedit to register Msiexec.exe (done while in safe mode). No Luck so far. Anyone with any ideas?

Rolling back won't work. That's only the hardware configuration. Search on Microsoft's site on how to remove a service. Remove it and then you can install it again.

Actually now that I think about it, check the event log for an error message. If the MS Installer won't start it will log and event. Look up that event in Microsoft's knowlegebase.

Thanks mikecel79

There was something in the MS database doc 319624 in case anyone cares. I told what to do. It was a permissions issue for DCOM and for the system account. Works now.
