windows installer problems

i installed a program on my computer fine, but when trying to do the same thing on a friends computer, and it said that there was an error, and it mentioned that windows installer might not be installed. i don't know what to do besides reinstall windows because i couldn't find windows installer for xp, only for 2000 or 98. any ideas?
 
I read this on another forum so I cannot take credit "If you go to the windows update site and click scan for updates, it should automatically install windows installer for you.".
